Space-Qualified Amplifiers

Custom designs for space & military applications

With our TRL-9 optical amplification technology and 30 years of experience in providing optical amplifiers for submarine and terrestrial communications, MPBC is now a leading supplier of optical amplifiers for space applications.

We provide qualified PM and Non-PM boosters and low-noise amplifiers for LEO, MEO, and GEO, where size, weight and power (SWaP) and high reliability are essential.

Our customized “New Space” designs use COTS optical components, which have undergone rigorous testing to ensure survivability under harsh environmental conditions such as thermal vacuum, shock, vibration and radiation. Radiation tolerant control and driving electronics are available for simplified integration.

Mechanical housings are designed around your footprint and mission-specific shock and vibration requirements. Our optical amplifier units can combine a high-power booster and low-noise amplifier in a single enclosure, and are compatible with the Space Development Agency’s OCT standard.

Our space development approach, supported by our multidisciplinary team composed of optical, mechanical, electrical, software, product and quality assurance experts has led to successful TRL-9 deployments. We are able to progress efficiently from custom EM designs, to successful QM qualification, to full FM serial production using our space-qualified processes.

All R&D and manufacturing are conducted in our North American facility.

Thermal Vacuum chamber

In-house testing

MPBC rigorously conducts assembly, sub-assembly, and component-level testing at its facility in North America. This facility boasts a specialized fiber component testing laboratory dedicated to comprehensive evaluation, qualification, and lot testing of components. Tests include assessments for shock and vibration resistance, and thermal cycling endurance.

MPBC is equipped with TVAC (Thermal Vacuum) chambers, essential for subjecting components and assemblies to vacuum conditions and varying temperatures to simulate the extreme environmental conditions in space.

In addition to its in-house capabilities, MPBC leverages the expertise of its affiliated Electronics Test Centres located across Canada. These facilities specialize in EMI/EMC and environmental testing.
