MPB was founded in 1976 and began operations on January 4th, 1977 as a spin-off of RCA Canada’s Research and Development Laboratories.
The company witnessed significant growth in the 1990s when it ventured into the niche market of undersea telecommunications with the development of undersea branching multiplexers for the trans-Atlantic cable TAT-9, a groundbreaking optical fiber system facilitating commercial communications traffic between North America and Europe in a star network, efficiently managing traffic based on demand.
In response to the technological shift towards all-optical systems in the late 1990s, MPBC developed a series of Optical Line Enhancing transmission equipment specifically designed for repeaterless systems. These innovations aimed to extend the reach of fiber optic systems without the need for regeneration, addressing the challenges posed by long unrepeated links. MPBC’s patented Super Raman technology, rooted in third-order pumping techniques, became a cornerstone technology significantly enhancing the distance and channel counts of unrepeated systems in the telecommunications market.
Within the same time frame, our developmental endeavours seamlessly transitioned into the development of Fiber Lasers and Fiber Amplifiers, meeting the demands of the scientific and industrial sectors where power efficiency, reliability, and compact size are paramount.
More recently, we have split our Optical Amplifier line between Telecom and Space applications with the development of Space-based amplifiers for GEO and LEO satellite constellations as the need for connectivity continues to grow.
Through the decades, MPBC has excelled as a technology leader thanks to our unwavering commitment to R&D. This core value, instilled by my father when he founded MPB, is the driving force behind our continuous evolution. Yet, the true strength of our company lies in our people.
